FIRE PROTECTION

Risk Assessments

Risk Assessments are an important step in protecting your workers and your business, as well as complying with the Law.  They help you to focus on the risks that matter in the workplace - the ones with the potential to cause your workers harm. The Law does not expect you to eliminate all risks, but it does require you to protect people as far as is 'reasonably practicable'.

Fire Risk Assessment

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, effective October 2006 is applicable to all UK Businesses and Organisations, which can be inspected by the Fire Authorities for compliance. Non compliance may result in substantial fines and closure of part or all of your workplace and even imprisonment.

The Order says that the 'Responsible Person' has to undertake a Fire Risk Assessment and if you have more than five employees, the assessment must be written down.

There are five steps involved in producing a Fire Risk Assessment as follows:

  • Identify the hazards
  • Identify the people who may be at risk
  • Evaluate the risks - are precautions adequate or is further action necessary?
  • Record your findings - provide information and training, prepare emergency plans etc
  • Review the assessment
  •

It should be remembered that the Fire Risk Assessment is seen as a 'living' document and once completed should not be put in a drawer and forgotten! It should be reviewed at least annually, but should also be monitored to see if the risk management measures you have put in place are working properly.  It should also be reviewed if there are any changes within the workplace or any working practices are changed. The Fire Risk Assessment and all other relevant documents must be made available on the premises at all times to a Fire Inspector, Local Authority and HSE.
